- Be patient -- with yourself. Don't stress about what you don't know. Use what you do know.
- Pay attention to the affective -- watch body language and make eye contact.
- Look at process rather than product, particularly when establishing a relationship with your students.
- Be yourself -- don't be afraid to laugh and have fun.
- Talk to veteran tutors for pointers.
- Know when to ask for help.
- Show empathy with your students.
- Establish trust.
- Ask questions.
- WAIT for answers! Use the 5-second rule.
- Don't over-tutor!
- Be a "guide on the side" and encourage your student to find the answers themselves.

I especially enjoyed reading your tutoring tips. Your last two points, the 5-second rules and over tutoring struck with me. I think many of us forget that the point of tutoring is to help our tutees learn to do the work themselves, and not to rely on us. But, in the beginning, I do feel it is ok to over-tutor, to give a model of how to write theses, to create outlines, and show how to analyze rather than summarize--then have them start doing it on their own. Thanks for the tips.
